Udyam / MSME Registration
Udyam Registration is the official MSME (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprise) registration with the Ministry of MSME. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar in 2020.
What this filing does
Udyam Registration is the official MSME (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprise) registration with the Ministry of MSME. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar in 2020. The registration itself is free with the government, but the form requires an accurate self-declaration of your investment, turnover, and activity codes — a wrong declaration can disqualify you from the very benefits you registered for.
The application is filed on the Udyam portal, the activity is mapped to the right NIC codes, and the enterprise category (Micro, Small, or Medium) is confirmed.
Common reasons founders engage this
- You want the 45-day payment protection from corporate buyers under the MSMED Act.
- You need MSME status to apply for priority-sector lending or government tenders reserved for MSMEs.
- Your bank or lender has asked for an Udyam certificate.
- You want the lower interest rates on business loans available to registered MSMEs.
Documents you will need to send
Most of these can be scanned or photographed from your phone. Everything required is listed in the checklist sent the same day, so nothing is collected later as a surprise.
- PAN of the business (or of the proprietor for a sole proprietorship).
- Aadhaar of the person who'll sign for the business (used for OTP verification).
- Bank account details.
- Investment in equipment (machines, computers, etc.) and turnover figures for classification.
- Description of the business activity (mapped to NIC codes).
